Modem Not Connecting To The Internet? Tips To Troubleshoot

Of all the computer problems you will have, network issues amongst the worst. These can be incredibly frustrating. At worst, these could cost you the success of your business, or money-making hobby. So much, nowadays, depends on reliable Internet connectivity.

The most important component used in setting up your home Internet network is a modem. If your modem isn’t working right, or you accidentally messed up a number of the settings; you may decide to completely reset your modem to its default settings.

Here are some tips to troubleshoot router issues.

1)      Reboot the Computer

The first step should be rebooting your computer or device to see if that fixes the problem. You’d be surprised how often that straightforward step resolves issues. If restarting your computer or device doesn’t work, you’ll have to check out each potential problem area to see if it restores access.

2)      Forget and Rejoin your wireless network

Your phone or tablet remembers information about your wireless network so that it can quickly reconnect once you get home. But if something goes awry with your network, your devices might be remembering some poor information. Look for the option on your device to forget the wireless network. Do this, and then rejoin.

3)      Check the Wires

It may seem obvious, but amongst the simplest troubleshooting steps, is to check all the leads and wires connected to your Internet connection. Start where your Internet service enters your house. This could be your internet company’s line drop, a satellite dish or a telephone line. Make sure the cable is connected securely with lines which run outside the house. Be sure that these haven’t been damaged by the weather or by curious creatures, such as possums or cockroaches!.

4)      Reset the Modem

No matter what type of modem you have got, the reset button is probably placed on the back of the modem and is typically red. It is recessed to stop it from being pushed accidentally, so you will need a bent paperclip or pen tip to press it.

5)      Update Windows

Your network problems might be caused by your system. If that is the case, Windows could have possibly released a fix. Check and be sure to update your Windows machine to the latest release. Click under Windows Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Click Check for Updates.

6)      Wireless Router Outages

If you use a wireless access point or wireless router to access the web with a laptop, then the wireless connection could be the explanation for your problem. Consult the user manual to clarify the method of  wireless device. It is usually done by typing the device’s IP address into a Web browser. From there, you will need to see the manual to discover the right settings. You may need to call your Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
