What to Do When Your Computer Won’t Turn On

Anyone who works or plays with computers might have experience dealing with computer repair at least once. Few computer issues are more irritating than dealing with a computer that won’t turn on. Many computer problems are fairly easy to fix for a computer technician. When the computer won’t come on, options are limited.

The first thing to check when your computer won’t come on is that the computer is turning on partially. Look for lights on the computer and listen for fans or a spinning hard drive. If lights are observed or operating sounds are heard, it means the computer is coming on at least partially, and the problem might be in the monitor, cable, or video card. If this is the case, make sure the monitor power cord is plugged in and that the monitor is attached to the computer. If the monitor is getting power and is attached to the computer correctly but is not displaying anything, either the monitor has died or the computer’s video card is not working. If possible, plug another monitor into the computer to check if it works. If not, a computer service call might be in order.

The next step in troubleshooting a computer that will not turn on is obvious and it annoys most people who contact a computer repair professional, but it is important to rule out a problem. Check that the computer is plugged in. Check that the plug is attached to a surge protector or a wall outlet. Then, if there is a surge protector, make sure that it is plugged into a wall outlet. If everything is connected correctly, make sure that the power cord is plugged into the computer’s power supply. If it is, make sure that the power supply’s switch was not turned off by mistake.

In case of a laptop, the battery may be dead. As they age, laptop batteries lose capacity and do not charge as efficiently. You might consider buying and installing a new battery, which is an easy task. Also, check the connection of the battery charger to an outlet, make sure the multiple parts of the charger are connected, and that the charger is connected to the laptop. Trying another charger will allow you to determine if the charger is working correctly. Chargers fail often, so this is a common issue with laptops.

If all of these actions do not fix the problem, there is a larger issue that should be addressed by a computer repair technician. The computer needs to be opened and the internal connections should be checked for tightness. Of course, before opening a computer and probing around in it, make sure the power cord is not attached to avoid possible shock hazards. If this does not solve the problem, it is most likely that the computer’s power source has failed. It can be replaced, but as with most computer issues, opening it up and replacing components is best left to computer service professionals. So, we are here to help you.
